It’s appropriate that the garden of Mr. & Mrs. J.D. Grant made it to postcard status. Katherine Mulroy Grant served as president of the Skaneateles Garden Club, hosted club meetings at her home on West Lake Street, and won first prize for flower arranging at the club’s 1952 flower show. And in 1953, she addressed the Village Improvement Association on “Foundation Planting.”
A native of Marcellus and a French teacher at Skaneateles High School, Katherine married James D. Grant in 1936. They honeymooned in Europe and returned to the states on the Queen Mary. Mr. Grant was an engineer (Cornell, ’09) and supervisor at the International Harvester works in Auburn; he retired in 1941 and served as Mayor of Skaneateles from 1947 to 1951.
Mrs. Grant was also a member of the Monday Evening Club, and hosted their summer picnic in 1943, in the garden above.
