This Shining Cluster

“Embosomed in Central New York lies a group of beautiful lakes varying from ten to forty miles in length, and nearly parallel with each other, which cannot escape the eye glancing ever so casually over a map of the Empire State. The quotations of flour have given the ‘Genesee County’ almost a world-wide reputation but the region embracing this shining cluster of lakes, including the Skaneateles on the east and the Canandaigua on the west — the Scotland of America — is not less celebrated for its beautiful scenery and its historical associations as the ancient home of the Iroquois, those six fierce nations of the North.”

— From “Logan and the Home of the Iroquois” in The Knickerbocker, June 1859
