Skaneateles, 1888

“We have heard of Skaneateles, N.Y., but never heard any one able to pronounce the name. It’s a good one to scare cats.  — Commercial Bulletin

“Skaneateles has a very pleasant sound when pronounced correctly but I have actually seen a cat jump nearly out of her skin on hearing Schaghticoke emphasized on the first syllable. She would have quite accomplished the feat if the skin had not jumped with her. J.W.” – Wade’s Fibre and Fabric, August 18, 1888
